Martial arts in schools
Meeting young people where they are
At Lindsworth School in Kings Norton, a specialist setting where many pupils have been excluded from mainstream education, our coaches run weekly mixed martial arts sessions. The aim has never been fighting. It is respect, self-discipline and a sense of belonging for young people who learn differently.
Sessions are built around the things that help these students most, managing emotions, reading body language, communicating and working as a team, so the confidence they find on the mats follows them back into the classroom and beyond.
Built for every learner
Accommodating autism and behavioural needs
For many neurodivergent young people, martial arts offers something the classroom can't: clear routines, a physical outlet for big feelings, and small, achievable goals that build genuine self-belief.
A release for big emotions
A safe, structured outlet to channel frustration and learn to self-regulate, away from the classroom pressure.
Respect & self-discipline
Clear routines and expectations that translate into calmer, more focused behaviour back in class.
Social & communication skills
Reading body language, teamwork and non-verbal communication, practised in every session.
Confidence & self-worth
Small wins on the mats build genuine self-belief; pupils have re-engaged with school and moved up sets.
Pupils “now think of themselves as big, bright, confident, open individuals,” with that self-belief showing up in their schoolwork.
